Theatre clearance and start of renovation work
The final curtain has fallen at the old Chössi Theatre. After many unforgettable performances and encounters, a new chapter is now beginning.
We are currently clearing out the theatre and preparing for the next steps. From July, extensive renovation work will begin in the railway hall – particularly in the theatre area. This will lay the foundations for a contemporary cultural venue that will continue to provide a space for special experiences in the future.
We will be taking a break from our programme during the construction period. The reopening is planned for autumn 2027 and will be celebrated with a major festival. We are already looking forward to seeing you again and would like to thank you warmly for your patience and support.
We will provide information about any cultural events organised by zukunft.bahnhof taking place during the renovation phase via our newsletter and on this website.
You can find the full program here!

Effective immediately, Pascal Häring—who oversees our cultural programming—will assume artistic responsibility for cultural activities at the Bahnhalle. For the 2025–26 season, he is planning a “transitional program” featuring approximately 15 events.
In April 2026, as every year, the Kanti Wattwil theater group will perform its new play in the Bahnhalle, and in May, the Chössi Theater association will stage an original production written specifically for Toggenburg. We are particularly looking forward to that.
Starting in June 2026, the theater will undergo extensive renovation, and the cultural program will take a one-year hiatus before resuming in the fall of 2027 with a renewed infrastructure and a coordinated program organized by us and the Chössi Theater Association. Under the new operating structure, the Chössi Association will be responsible for its own program, featuring around 8 annual events.

Bahnhalle: A New Look Starting in 2027
The theatre in the "Bahnhalle" is evolving. Starting in June 2026, the Theater in Bahnhalle Lichtensteig will get a new look—and, at the same time, reclaim a piece of its history.
The theater auditorium, housed within the walls of the former hotel, used to be twice as high. We are restoring this original ceiling height. This will create an open space that can be used, depending on the occasion, as a charming small theater for intimate audience experiences or as a light-filled hall. A place for great stories, soft sounds, and moving moments.
We are installing a modern theater infrastructure: professional technology, a flexible seating solution, and a harmonious lighting concept. Everything needed to ensure the theater continues to inspire in the future and the space can be used in a variety of ways.

Our goal:
A contemporary theater space for all genres—from theater and dance to circus—that inspires artists and moves audiences. A place for the culture of tomorrow—right in the heart of Toggenburg.
