The Bahnhalle under renovation
The renovation of the Bahnhalle is in full swing. Since July, the building has been stripped back, dismantled and rebuilt so that theatre, dance, circus and much more can return here from late autumn 2027. We will celebrate the reopening with a big festival.

But you won't have to go without the performing arts until then: from 9 to 13 December 2026, SAMAR by Rigolo Tanztheater will be our guest at Stadtufer Lichtensteig. The result is the SAMAR EXPERIENCE, an immersive experience with light and object installations, soundscapes, contemporary dance and aerial acrobatics. Pascal Häring has been responsible for the stage department at zukunft.bahnhof since November 2024. From November 2026, he will be joined by Rebecca C. Schnyder, playwright and performing arts manager from St. Gallen, as co-director. Together, they are preparing the reopening.

From late autumn 2027, Bahnhalle – Bühne zukunft.bahnhof will offer you a diverse programme of theatre, dance, circus and more, curated by Rebecca and Pascal. In addition, the Chössi Theater association will present its «Carte Blanche» with around eight of its own events per year.

Bahnhalle: Hollowed out, propped up, reimagined
Anyone passing by the Bahnhalle these days will hardly recognise it. Since July, the building has been stripped back: the intermediate floors have been removed, and in the eastern part, little more than the facade remains standing. A huge scaffold, weighted with around 80 tonnes of concrete blocks, holds it upright. The listed facade with its prism-shaped shingles is being preserved while a new building takes shape inside.

The reward for all this effort: the theatre hall is regaining its original ceiling height. This creates an open space that, depending on the occasion, can be used as a charming small theatre for intimate moments or as a light-filled hall. A place for big stories, quiet notes and moving moments.

We are also installing modern theatre infrastructure: professional technology, flexible seating and a coherent lighting concept. Everything it takes for the space to be used in many different ways and to keep inspiring audiences in the future.

A contemporary theater space for all genres—from theater and dance to circus—that inspires artists and moves audiences. A place for the culture of tomorrow—right in the heart of Toggenburg.
